Indian Embassy celebrates 78th Independence Day in Kathmandu

Kathmandu : The Embassy of India in Nepal celebrated India's 78th Independence Day today at its premises in Kathmandu.   The event began with the hoisting of the national flag by the Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, followed by a video message from Indian President Droupadi Murmu. In her address, the President highlighted India's progress over the past 77 years and paid tribute to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India's independence.

At the event, the Ambassador honored the widows and close relatives of deceased Gorkha soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces by distributing 55 million rupees and blankets. The embassy reported that 125.5 million rupees have been paid to the widows and close relatives of 107 deceased soldiers. This payment includes benefits under the Army Group Insurance (AGI) program for the year 2024, including death-in-service, extended insurance, and AGI maturity payments.

The embassy also announced book grants for 21 educational institutions and libraries across five provinces of Nepal. This initiative aims to enhance access to educational materials for students in remote areas in response to received requests.

Besides the embassy officials and their families, members of the Indian community residing in Nepal and friends of India participated in the celebration of India's 78th Independence Day. The event featured patriotic songs and dances performed by teachers and students of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center and Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kathmandu.

Independence Day 2024 Celebrations at the Embassy of India, Kathmandu

1. 78th Independence Day of India was celebrated at the Embassy of India in Kathmandu on 15 August 2024. 

2. The celebrations began with the hoisting of the national flag by His Excellency, the Ambassador of India to Nepal. This was followed by playing of the video of the address to the nation from Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu. The President’s message highlighted the progress in various fields in the past 77 years and paid tribute to freedom fighters who laid their lives for the independence of India.

3. On the occasion, the Ambassador honoured widows and next of kin of deceased Gorkha soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces by disbursing their dues worth NRs 5.50 Crore and a blanket to each. In addition, NRs 12.55 crore has been disbursed to the widows and next of kin of 107 deceased members of the Indian Armed Forces. This payment covers benefits under the Army Group Insurance (AGI) programme, including death-in-service benefits, extended insurance benefits and AGI maturity payments for the year 2024.

4. The Embassy also announced book grant to 21 educational institutions and libraries across five provinces in Nepal. This initiative aims to promote access to educational materials for students in remote areas, in response to requests received. 
 
5. The 78th Independence Day of India celebrations were attended by members of the Indian community in Nepal and friends of India apart from Embassy officials and their families. The event witnessed renditions of patriotic songs and dance performances by teachers and students of Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center of the Embassy and Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kathmandu.
