NC senior leader Gopal Man Shrestha no more

Lalitpur : Senior Nepali Congress leader Gopal Man Shrestha has passed away on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Helios Hospital in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur.

Nepali Congress Acting Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Dulal confirmed Shrestha’s death and said the party would soon issue an official statement with further details.

Preparations have been made to keep Shrestha’s mortal remains at the Nepali Congress central office in Sanepa on Wednesday morning for final tributes. A funeral procession will then be taken to Pashupati Aryaghat, where the last rites will be performed.

Shrestha was recently honored by the Nepali Congress with the position of senior leader in recognition of his long contribution to the party. He had been suffering from cancer for the past year and had received treatment at hospitals in Nepal and India.

He had also participated in the inaugural session of the Nepali Congress special general convention held in January.

Shrestha was elected to the House of Representatives multiple times from Syangja and served as a minister in various portfolios, including physical planning, forests, industry, and education.

A veteran democratic leader, Shrestha spent a total of five years in prison during different periods for political reasons. He also served as the acting president of Nepali Congress (Democratic).
