Home Minister Sudhan Gurung Set to Become Vice-Chairperson
Kathmandu: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has intensified preparations to nominate the remaining central committee members and office-bearers following its general convention. As the party’s central committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday is expected to nominate some central members and office-bearers, the name of Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has almost been finalized for the post of vice-chairperson, according to sources.
According to party sources, Sunil Lamsal, who is considered close to Balendra Shah, has also expressed interest in the vice-chairperson position. However, party chairperson Rabi Lamichhane appears positive about assigning the responsibility to Sudhan Gurung.
Sources said the party leadership believes Gurung has been playing an effective role in coordinating between Rabi Lamichhane and Balendra Shah. The leadership has also concluded that appointing Gurung as vice-chairperson would make the party’s office-bearer structure more inclusive.
According to the RSP statute, the party chairperson has the authority to nominate 51 central committee members. However, not all members will be nominated in Wednesday’s meeting. General Secretary Bipin Kumar Acharya said the nominations will be carried out in phases while incorporating all groups involved in the party’s integration process.
Seven office-bearers, including the chairperson, and 99 central committee members have already been elected from the general convention. The party still has to nominate one vice-chairperson, one general secretary, one spokesperson, three deputy spokespersons, two joint general secretaries, one treasurer, two deputy treasurers, along with 51 central committee members.
Meanwhile, competition has emerged between Bhupdev Shah and Sudip Dhakal for the position of general secretary allocated to the Balendra Shah faction. Pramod Neupane is considered a strong contender for the spokesperson position, while outgoing treasurer Lima Adhikari has indicated that she may not take the same responsibility again.
